Lex Gillette

4-Time US Paralympic Silver Medalist

World Record Holder in Long Jump

Lex Gillette is an American track and field athlete who has proved to the world that there are absolutely no excuses. Retina detachments in both eyes have left him with the challenge of living life with no sight. Fortunately for Lex, once he lost his sight, he gained a vision. The 2016 track and field season was another successful one as Lex made his fourth consecutive Paralympic Games Team for the United States of America. He persevered through tough conditions to win a silver medal in the long jump at the Rio Paralympics. He has now won four career Paralympic medals in the long jump. Up next is the 2017 IPC Athletics World Championships in London, England where he aims to win gold and secure a third consecutive world champion title.

How a Visually Impaired Paralympian Recognizes His Jordans by Feel

Lex Gillette can identify each pair of Nike Jordans in his collection just by the feel of them.

The shoe that has a hard loop around the heel and a cool tongue? It’s one of his Jordan 6s. The shoe that’s made of crocodile skin with metal accents around the eyelets? One of his special edition 4s.

I Need You To See My Color

If you don’t know my story, I’m originally from North Carolina. I started experiencing sight loss when I was eight years old, and that led to a string of 10 operations that I had in hopes of fixing the issue, but after the last one, doctors said there was nothing else they could do to help my sight and I would eventually become blind. I was transitioning from a world where I could see, to a world of blindness.
