Aspen, Colo. - After sitting out last year’s Adaptive Snocross finals due to a shattered heel in the Snowboarding Boardercross competition three days prior, Mike Schultz, returns to Aspen and wins gold today giving him a total of five Winter X Games medals in Snocross. Injured in a 2008 Snocross accident that cost Schultz his left leg above the knee, he realized a regular prosthetics didn’t work with the rigors of his sports. Within six months, Schultz engineered his own leg and started BioDapt, Inc. which patented the “Moto Knee” and “Versa Foot” that makes prosthetics for action sport athletes and wounded soldiers.
Seven years since his accident, Mike has won seven gold medals at X Games in adaptive motocross and snocross and just recently added snowboard and was named to the U.S. Paralympic Snowboard team.
Two athletes in Mike's competition class also wear the BioDapt moto knee that Mike built and when asked today after his win how it feels to see the success of what he has designed, Schultz said: "I love to compete, and winning medals is rewarding - but what I really love is seeing athletes challenge themselves, dig deep and go after their goals. If I get to help along the way, that is way deeper than winning a medal myself." Friend and BioDapt teammate, E.J. Poplawski, took bronze.
